Venom is a key evolutionary application of animals and a traditional source of biomolecular leads in biomedicine, agriculture and biotechnology. However, the coherent understanding of venom complexity, evolutionary ecology and translational potential has only recently became possible via methodological advancements in a new research field referred to as “Venomics”. In this presentation, recent insights on the evolutionary origin and functional implementation of venom in neglected animal groups will be introduced and emerging fields of translational application of venom components will be highlighted. A particular emphasis will be given on understudied arthropods, especially small arachnids and insects.
