Mobile Cartography: mobile-first and responsive maps & visualizations

Robert Emmet Roth

As mobile devices continue to reshape the way we interact with maps, traditional cartographic principles must evolve to meet new user needs. This presentation highlights key findings from a two-day workshop focused on defining research priorities in mobile cartography. We present two major outcomes: (1) a consensus definition of ‘mobile’ or ‘mobile-first’ maps as those optimized for small screens and location-aware, and (2) a structured three-part research agenda based on the concept of mobile user interaction as a dialogue between the user (human factors), the map (design considerations), and the mobile device (technological aspects). We will introduce the resulting research agenda and discuss emerging cross-cutting themes that continue to shape the future of mobile cartography.
