The lecture aims to provide the audience with EU and government perspectives from the developed and developing world enriched by experience from non-governmental organizations on the needs, opportunities and challenges in updating the existing voluntary global framework for chemicals management. It will strive to address the following issues: Are we focusing on the right chemicals? Which tools must the instrument include? How do we finance the action? The outcome of discussions will focus on the challenges ahead in preparing for the International Conference on Chemicals Management, ICCM5 in Bonn, Germany in September 2023 and further long-term needs for effectively addressing chemicals and pollution at all levels - global, EU and nationally. It will strive to identify future actions that require attention from the research community to the science policy interface.
