Abstract:
Energy infrastructure in remote Arctic communities is critical. Under the harsh Arctic conditions, a constant energy supply is essential to support well-being. Due to the remoteness, energy has to be generated locally. Currently, a significant amount of energy is generated by diesel in remote Arctic communities. The use of diesel is complicated due to its challenging supply chain. Locally harvested renewable energy can be an option the reduce the dependency on imported diesel.
It is crucial to study the integration process for introducing renewable energy generation to remote Arctic communities. For energy planning, a balance between affordability, sustainability and
Security should be aimed for. Therefore, knowledge of the local geography, geology, environment, potential energy, and social aspects is needed to plan and predict the creation of energy infrastructure.
The lecture focuses on various renewable energy technologies for off-grid use, how technologies can be adapted to cold climate regions, and key variables for selecting different types of technology. The selection includes weather conditions, topography, and geology.
